What feels like a million years ago I wrote this post about the importance of owning your brand online. Today I would like to make a follow up post on that so that people understand that it doesn’t only go for businesses but also for the Average Joe’s (and Jane’s) out there.
Since I am an Internet geek it happens that I spend countless hours looking at domain names that might still be up for grabs at registration fee. I usually look for domain names that can make me money but somehow I decided to look if my brothers name was registered (Mathias Nilsson). It turns out it wasn’t so I decided to go ahead and buy it for just $9.98 at NameCheap. I was sure this domain name would come in handy one day if my brother decided he wanted to start a blog or something on those lines but since he doesn’t seem too keen on having his own blog I have decided to start one for him. I guess you can’t really call it a blog right now since it’s just a static page sitting there waiting for the Google rankings to kick in but it’s something nevertheless.
The main reason I make this post is just so that I can link to the Mathias Nilsson website and improve it’s rankings in Google but there is also a valuable lesson to be learned for all you Average Joe’s (and Jane’s) out there. If you don’t own the domain containing your name you are leaving yourself wide open to online pranks (or worse) like this. You have no control over what people write about you on a website with your name on it.
I have yet to decide what I am going to do with this new site of mine, most likely it will just sit there until my brother decides that he wants to do something with it or if he doesn’t want to do anything with it I will just have to wait for embarrassing pictures, or even worse, videos, to come around and I will upload it on the site when I have time. That’s what you get for not taking my advice and buying your own domain name
